The Knapsack
The anxiety never was mine.
It belonged to the world at large
Tidily stuffed in a knapsack
I thought I must carry.
Dutifully, I bore it on my shoulders
As I moved from place to place
Determined to believe in some way
That my carrying it would lighten the load
For others.
Then, one day, without reflection or debate
I set it down and took up another
Filled with my things;
Some pens for writing and a journal to match
A coloring book with a rainbow of pencils
For absent-minded expression
A few books for reading
And a pillow for rest.
Filled with my things
No room remained for the worry
So it remained behind
Perhaps for its rightful owner.
